SolutionsForUs Team Secures Third Place in Canada-Wide GeoApp Competition
Congratulations to the SolutionsForUs team—Ben Schoening, Gus Schiele, and Vincent Liu—for earning third place and a cash prize in the 2025 Esri Canada AppChallenge! Competing against 18 other teams from across Canada, they harnessed skills in GIScience, data analysis and computer coding to develop an innovative spatial solution to a real-world societal issue. The week-long competition was judged by a panel of local and international experts.
The was designed for the Metro Vancouver area and will help individuals understand the cost of living across the metropolitan area by providing detailed location-specific insights. While the traditional "living wage" metric focuses on a two-adult and two-child household, the MetroWage calculator tool expands this by considering six distinct household types, various transportation options, and breaking down living costs for each municipality given any user income.
The team was assembled and coordinated by the SFU Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (ECCE) in GIS managed within the Geography Department, Faculty of Environment.
Congratulations Ben, Gus and Vincent on a great achievement!
