The mapit.space team win first place in the 2018 Esri Canada App Challenge competition
Congratulations to Alysha, Anthony and Chris, the mapit.space team of our undergraduate students who won first place in the Esri Canada GIS Centers of Excellence (ECCE) in GIS 2018 App Challenge. During the week-long competition, teams combined geographic information systems (GIS) skills with computer programming, software tools, geospatial analysis and data handling to develop spatial solutions to selected societal problems.
Alysha van Duynhoven (Computing Science), Anthony Lee (Geography) and Chris Yee (Geography) are also enrolled in the Spatial Information Systems (SIS) Certificate program in the Department of Geography. The mapit.space team designed and developed as an interactive geospatial online GeoApp that compares savings in terms of fuel costs and carbon emissions for typical travel routes of a select set of electric and conventional vehicles for the City of Vancouver as the study area of focus and with publicly available data.
The mapit.space team was coordinated by the SFU Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (ECCE) in GIS within the Faculty of Environment and Geography Department, and managed by Drs. Suzana Dragicevic and Shiv Balram. The App Challenge competition has been organized for several year now by Drs. Brent Hall and Michael Leahy from the Higher Education and Research Department of Esri Canada. There were more than 20 entries in the 2018 competition from across Canada. The judging was done by a panel of international GIS experts: Ian Wint (GIS Manager, City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida), Dr. Josef Strobl (Professor and Head, Department of Geoinformatics, University of Salzburg ,Austria) and Jan Willem van Eck (Chief Research Officer & Lecturer, Esri Netherlands).
As winners of the competition, the mapit.space team members will each receive a fully-paid trip to the July 2018 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, USA, a major event of several thousand GIS experts, software users and participants from industry and academia from around the world.
Congratulations Alysha, Anthony and Chris, well done!
