Admission Questions

How do I join the program? 

High school applicants

When applying to join SFU, you may apply for direct admission to the SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Program and select one of the available FASS majors in the program. High school applicants must apply to begin in the fall term.

Internal SFU applicants

Internal SFU applicants may apply to join in any term, but must either demonstrate the feasibility of completing the program in six years or else acknowledge their intention to complete the program in more than six years. Internal SFU applicants should seek the advice of the program coordinator at fass_partnerships@sfu.ca if they are interested in joining the program. 

When is the application deadline to join the program? 

The first cohort starts Fall 2026. Admission applications for high school students opens October 1, 2025 and ends January 31, 2026.

What is the competitive admission grade range for this program? 

It is expected that competitive applicants to the SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Program will have high school averages in the mid-80s.

Students are encouraged to use this range as a guide to inform potential eligibility for admission to this program. However, grades equal to or higher than those listed above do not guarantee an offer of admission.

Will submitting my SAT/LSAT scores and other supplementary materials strengthen my admission application? 

No. Supplementary materials (e.g., references, recommendation letters, SAT/LSAT scores) are not required for admission to this program and will bear no impact on your application.

Does admission to this program guarantee admission to the University of Exeter?

Yes, you are guaranteed an offer of admission to the provided you are legally admissible to the UK and meet the eligibility requirements at the end of your 5th term at SFU. These requirements include the completion of 60 units and you must be in good academic standing (CGPA 3.0 or higher). If you do not meet the eligibility requirements for admission to Exeter, you can transition into your department's standard BA program and complete your SFU degree. 

Program Questions

Where will I live when in the UK? 

As part of the SFU-Exeter program, you are guaranteed university-run housing for your first year at Exeter, as long as you submit your application and pay the deposit by the deadline. You may choose to live elsewhere or reapply to live in university-run housing for your subsequent years. 

Do I need to complete the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) to study at the University of Exeter?

No. One of the advantages of the SFU-Exeter program is that you do not need to spend time or money taking the LSAT exam. 

What types of law can I study at the University of Exeter?

There are many areas of law including criminal law, environmental law, immigration law, property law, plus many more.

Can I complete a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from SFU if law school is not for me?

Yes. If you change your mind or do not meet the eligibility requirements to study at Exeter Law School, you may continue in your BA program at SFU. 

What is the difference between a LLB and a JD? 

A JD is a postgraduate degree which requires an undergraduate degree before entry while an LLB is an undergraduate Bachelor of Laws degree. The LLB designation is common in Commonwealth countries and is officially recognized in Canada upon the student's successful completion of the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) assessment process.

Finance Questions

Will I be paying fees to SFU while studying at the University of Exeter?

No, you will only pay fees to the university where you are attending for the semester. While at Exeter, you will receive a 20% tuition discount. Note that you are responsible for your program fees, airfare to and from the UK, passport and visa fees, accommodation, living expenses, and overseas student health coverage.

Career Questions

Can I practice law in Canada after completing the program?

Yes. Graduates of the SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Program will be qualified to practice law in Canada upon successful completion of the NCA assessment process, articling, and the bar admission process of the province of which you'd like to practice law (except Quebec which has a different process). 

The courses you will take during your final year of the program at SFU fulfills the Certificate in Foundations of Canadian Law, which is designed to help you pass the five NCA exams to receive accreditation. 

Can I return to the UK to practice law there?

It is possible to practice law in the UK provided you fulfill the immigration and licensing requirements to work in the UK.

Does Exeter offer work-integrated learning opportunities or career support for students looking to gain work experience in the legal field?

The University of Exeter and its various student organizations organize many career- and employability-related events on campus throughout the academic year, which allow students to network with potential employers and arrange for summer internships and placements. Career advisors and academic tutors are also be available to provide advice and support in securing these opportunities.
