60th Anniversary Toolkit

SFU is officially celebrating its 60th anniversary from September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026. While there are no specific kick-off events planned, those of you planning events and activities during this timeframe can use this toolkit to enhance awareness of this milestone. Please consider using these toolkit materials to develop specific 60th anniversary content or programming for your new or existing events (based on available resources and budget).

Anniversary key messages can be woven into speeches or invitation text, anniversary graphics can be used on event invitations or event slides/banners or curated archival photos could be featured in your event slideshow.

If you are considering how your event or activity could be linked to the 60th anniversary celebrations and would like an opportunity to brainstorm or get feedback on your ideas, please feel free to reach out to Sue Porter, Director of Ceremonies and Events, at sporter@sfu.ca.

Key Messages

  • Since 1965, SFU has been different鈥 on purpose. We built a leading research university atop Burnaby Mountain from the ground up and challenged what post-secondary education means.
  • In our early days, we were known as the 鈥渞adical campus,鈥 a university that wasn鈥檛 afraid to challenge the status quo. And at every stage of our 60-year journey we have responded to the changing needs of both the world around us, and the people and communities we serve.
  • Since SFU鈥檚 creation, the university has developed a robust and engaged community of students, alumni, faculty, staff, research and community partners, and donors. On our 60th anniversary we celebrate our success to-date, as we lean into a future of further connection, advancement and innovation.
  • In a time where our world faces increasingly complex and urgent challenges that can only be solved through deeper understanding, SFU continues to make a meaningful impact here in British Columbia and beyond.
  • SFU is collaborating with government and industry to tackle shared challenges, train workers for the jobs of the future and to accelerate homegrown innovation to make a difference for B.C., Canada and the world.
  • We are grateful and proud of what we have accomplished to-date and look forward to what will be accomplished in the future as a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. From clean energy and climate innovation, to securing Canada鈥檚 digital sovereignty by supporting artificial intelligence and quantum computing, and health care delivery, SFU has so much more to offer.
