Crafting a response to an EDI prompt

Grant applications increasingly ask researchers to give thoughtful reflection to the research environment they create.  Here are some steps you can work through to develop a meaningful actions

  1. Identify challenges. Brainstorm potential barriers that prevent the recruitment and full participation of individuals.  Which barriers may be related to being from a group traditionally underrepresented in science?
    1. Focus on barriers in the categories of: Outreach, Recruitment, Retention, Mentorship.
    2. Consider where you can best have impact: internationally, nationally, at SFU, or in your own research group or lab
  2. Describe Actions. What is something specific that you can do to address a barrier that you have identified? The table below has examples, and some potential actions to give you some additional ideas. Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives is a good way to plan to meet your long-term goals.
  3. Evaluate outcomes. Without relying on demographic information on your trainees, which is private, and likely too small of a sample size to be statistically significant, identify indicators that suggest progress towards addressing a challenge. How will this inform your future actions?
