The Department of Geography invites applications for the following position(s):
Teaching Assistants
Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU)
All positions have a closing date of August 19th, 2025, at 1:00pm.
Please review the location information carefully as some courses will be offered online and some will be offered in-person. TAs teaching online courses need to be comfortable in an online environment such as Canvas; some courses may require additional qualifications as per the postings below. Please note that training will be available through SFU’s Centre for Educational Excellence and is recommended (overview, TA Day, ).
Applicants should complete the online application on the Department of Geography website. Please ensure you complete the correct version of the online application:
- Current graduate students in Geography at SFU: TA Internal - Application
- All other applicants: TA External - Application; you will be required to upload supporting documents including evidence of qualifications.
If you are not able to complete the online application, you may obtain an electronic application form from the Geography Department via email (geoggrad@sfu.ca) and return the completed electronic copy via email to the attention of Curtis Platson, Graduate Assistant.
In addition to the listed qualifications for each position, the Department of Geography will define qualification in accordance with of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU). Evaluation of the adequacy of qualifications is at the Chair’s/Director’s discretion. Departments may interview a short list of candidates. are on the Geography website and posted outside RCB 7123.
Many departments include a wide range of specializations and, in order to be appointed, a person must have sufficient knowledge of the course to interpret the course material. Qualifications for the TA positions in GEOG courses include experience with course subject matter obtained either via successful coursework completed in the area or direct practical experience. Course subject matter can be found described in the . Qualified TAs will also have demonstrated proficiency in English communication skills, both oral and written.

QUALIFICATIONS: |
Qualifications: Required technical/conceptual skills or experience: -experienced in 2D and 3D geovisualization methods and design; -experienced in 3D data collection (LiDAR; UAS; SfM), -3D data processing (SfM Photogrammetry; LiDAR); -ability to demonstrate applied 3D GIS, 3D geovisualization and 3D technology; -experienced in geographical information science (GIS technology, methods, data collection, representation); -Has taken GEOG 356/457 or GEOG 657 or equivalent knowledge and experience -Understanding of UAS operations and data acquisition -Understanding of 3D scanning devices and workflow Required software skills: -experienced user of Agisoft Metashape; -CloudCompare 2.12.X and later -MeshLab 2022.XX and later -experienced user of Unity3D 2019.X.XX and later; -experienced in multi-platform multi-format spatial data use. -experienced user of 3D GIS or equivalent; Trained and knowledgeable in 2D and 3D GIScience: concepts, implications, methods strategies surrounding through whole spectrum of GIS software work, and spatial analytical practice in 2D/3D and relationships between nature of spatial phenomena, data capture, representation, analysis and interpretation in 2D/3D; Proficient in Windows OS computing environments (Windows 10+); proficient in creating and using Microsoft PPT; experience with interoperation of multiple data types/formats, database types; Outstanding organizational, time management and communication skills; proactive, ability to take technical/pedagogical initiative. |
