Blowing New Life into Tradition: Jim Hopson’s Journey of Alphorn, Artistry, and Academic Discovery
JUNO-nominated musician initially wasn't sure he fit the mould of a typical graduate student. "I self-identify more as a working professional than as an academic," he says, reflecting on his decision to return to school after nearly two decades away. However, his leap into SFU鈥檚 Master of Education (MEd) in Arts Education became a life-changing journey, one that fused his flourishing music career with academic exploration, reshaping his future as an artist, educator, and scholar.
Jim had already built a thriving career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and educator, working across music genres and teaching learners of all ages. 鈥淎chieving mastery has been a long, challenging, and rewarding process of inquiry and self-discovery", shares Jim.
It was the encouragement of colleagues that drew Jim to SFU. 鈥淪everal of my like-minded colleagues are Arts Education alumni, and they all spoke very highly of the program,鈥 Jim recalls. 鈥淚 was immediately drawn to the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Arts Education within a community that embraces and encourages constant creative inquiry. The Tuesday evening class schedule was also ideal for working professionals like me.鈥
Throughout his MEd, Jim thrived. He fondly recalls the vibrant, creative energy of his cohort, where major artistic inquiry projects were shared and celebrated. A personal highlight? Cooking and serving a three-course Texas-style BBQ meal as part of Dr. Celeste Snowber鈥檚 Embodiment and Curriculum Inquiry course and earning academic credit. 鈥淲here else but SFU?!?鈥 he laughs.
His professors played a meaningful role in his journey. As Jim reflects, 鈥Dr. Vicki Kelly encouraged me to explore the ecological meaning behind my Alphorn work; Dr. Michael Ling deepened my understanding of soundscape compositions; Dr. Snowber encouraged reflection on the embodied experience of music-making; Dr. Lynn Fels helped me reframe performance as meaningful conversation; and Dr. Ching-Chiu Lin guided me in presenting my creative work within academic frameworks.
Returning to university after completing his Bachelor of Music at the University of Victoria in 2007 wasn't without challenges. Jim, who identifies as neurodivergent and autodidactic, had long taught himself the key aspects of his craft, including composition, arranging, and audio engineering. "Any early doubts, and there were many, about whether I truly belong in art academia have been completely dispelled by SFU's inclusive, broad-minded, and encouraging learning culture," shares Jim.
Jim is now preparing to enter SFU鈥檚 Master of Arts (MA) in Arts Education this summer, a natural progression that will allow him to pursue a formal thesis alongside his ambitious creative work.
At the heart of his upcoming thesis is his passion for the Alphorn, a long, curved wooden horn traditionally used in the Swiss Alps. While often viewed as a folk instrument, Jim has reimagined it as a contemporary powerhouse, pushing its expressive potential into bold, unexpected genres. His thesis, , based on his 2024 album, will explore the artistic and pedagogical foundations behind this work, offering a blueprint for musicians and educators seeking 鈥渆co-musical self-realization through song, wind, and groove in the post-digital age.鈥
鈥淔or me, every performance I give, every composition I write, every lesson I teach is a radical act of creative scholarship,鈥 Jim explains.
Reflecting on his time at SFU, Jim shares a key insight: 鈥淒ocumenting and analyzing the creative process can be a work of art in and of itself.鈥 As he begins work with his thesis supervisor, Dr. Lin, he has woven together his identities as an artist, teacher, and scholar into what he calls a "single holistic entity.鈥
For artists seeking to deepen their creative practice through scholarship and education, Jim shares his advice: 鈥淥nce you surrender yourself to the process of nurturing creativity in yourself and others, you鈥檒l begin to live artistically on a day-to-day basis鈥 meaningful art will flow from you, through you, almost effortlessly.鈥
With a master鈥檚 degree completed, a bold artistic project reshaping musical expectations, and a new academic chapter on the horizon, Jim Hopson is poised to keep expanding what鈥檚 possible, not just for the Alphorn but for any artist-educator-scholar daring to blend tradition, innovation, and inquiry.
