SFU Beedie students take first place at Oxford University’s 2025 International M&A Open

July 25, 2025

Six undergraduate students from SFU鈥檚 Beedie School of Business have claimed first place at the prestigious Oxford University International M&A Open 2025, hosted by CapitOx鈥擮xford鈥檚 Finance and Consulting Society. The competition drew over 80 teams from globally renowned institutions including the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University College London (UCL), Ivey Business School at Western University, and the University of Toronto.

Representing SFU Beedie were Anthony Ghaly, Bao Minh Nguyen, Iuliia Tuseeva, Carlos Salcedo, Kevin Leonardo, and Timothy Lu. The team earned a direct placement in the Global Finals based on the strength of their written submission, which was evaluated by professionals from leading financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Barclays, and PJT Partners.

In the final round, the team assumed the role of investment banking analysts and delivered a comprehensive 15-minute M&A pitch recommending that Airbnb acquire Tripadvisor in a $2.7 billion transaction. Their proposal included detailed financial modelling, strategic rationale, and a compelling investment thesis: that the acquisition would position Airbnb as a dominant player in the global travel experiences market through Tripadvisor鈥檚 subsidiary, Viator.

Following their presentation and a rigorous 10-minute Q&A, the team was awarded first place by an esteemed panel of judges, including Stewart Licudi, Head of European Investment Banking at William Blair, and Morgan Jiang, recognized as one of the Top 15 M&A Lawyers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Please join us in congratulating the team on this outstanding achievement.
