Getting Started

Grade 5

Do you teach Core French 5 or have students who are learning French for the first time? The units on this page are designed to build a strong foundation for students to gradually develop their French language skills. While these units align with the Core French Grade 5 curriculum, they are also suitable for students with limited exposure to French. Feel free to adapt the lessons to meet your students鈥 needs. Amusez-vous bien!

Unit 1 : Je peux rencontrer des nouvelles personnes, me pr茅senter et exprimer comment je me sens - I can meet new people, introduce myself, and explain how I feel.

Unit description:

In this introductory unit, students will learn how to greet someone and say good-bye in different ways. They will learn to introduce themselves and use the zones of regulation emotions to express how they feel. By the end of the unit, students will be able to introduce their new Francophone friend to their friends.

Unit objectives: 

  • Je peux saluer quelqu鈥檜n. I can greet someone. 
  • Je peux me pr茅senter. I can introduce myself.
  • Je peux dire comment je me sens et exprimer mes 茅motions. I can say how I am feeling and express my emotions. 

Unit 2: Qui suis-je? Je peux partager des informations sur moi-m锚me. 鈥 Who am I? I can share some information about myself.

Unit description:

In this unit, students share some basic information about themselves. By the end of the unit, students will fill out an identity card in French incorporating all the information they have learned.

Unit objectives:

  • Je peux partager des informations sur moi-m锚me (茅peler mon nom, mon 芒ge, ma f锚te). I can share information about myself (spell my name, age, birthday).
  • Je peux compter jusqu鈥櫭 31.  I can count to 31.
  • Je peux dire les mois de l'ann茅e. I can say the months of the year.
  • Je peux dire les lettres de l鈥檃lphabet.  I can say the letters of the alphabet.

Unit 3: MON STYLE PERSONNEL! Je peux expliquer et d茅crire ce que je porte. - MY PERSONAL STYLE! I can explain and describe what I wear.

Unit description :

In this unit, students will discuss their clothing preferences and what they like or dislike to wear. They will learn to describe the colors of different clothing items. By the end of the unit, students will participate in a fashion show and explain what they are packing for a trip, reflecting their personal style.

Unit objectives :

  • Je peux comprendre et 茅crire les noms des couleurs. I can understand and write the names of colours.
  • Je peux exprimer ce que je porte et d茅crire sa couleur. I can express what I am wearing and describe its colour(s).
  • Je peux dire ce que quelqu鈥檜n d鈥檃utre porte et d茅crire la couleur du v锚tement. I can say what someone else is wearing and describe the colour of the clothing item.

Unit 4: PARLONS DE NOS ACTIVIT脡S! Je peux communiquer ce que nous aimons faire ou jouer. - LET鈥橲 TALK ABOUT OUR ACTIVITIES! I can communicate what we like or don鈥檛 like to do or play.

Unit description :

In this unit, students will talk about the activities they like and don鈥檛 like to do/play. By the end of the unit, they will create a social media story about the activities that they would do in each month of the year.

An additional end of year final project has been included to reassess all four units鈥 comprehension and skill development: Students will write four yearbook pages about the people in their lives.

Unit objectives :

  • Je peux communiquer ce que j鈥檃ime ou je n鈥檃ime pas faire/jouer et les pr茅f茅rences des autres personnes. I can communicate what I like or don鈥檛 like to do/play, and the preferences of other people.
  • Je peux utiliser un outil de traduction. I can use translating a tool.
  • Je peux utiliser des 芦 mots-amis 禄 (cogn茅es) pour comprendre. I can use 鈥渇riendly words鈥 (cognates) to understand.
