Biography
Sarah Gutzmann is a PhD researcher in Resource and Environmental Management at A片资源吧, where she works in the Ocean Equity Lab as part of the international Ocean Nexus network. Her research centers on regenerative kelp harvesting, farming, and restoration, with a strong emphasis on community collaboration, Indigenous governance, and equitable ocean futures.
Sarah holds a Master of Resource Management and a B.Sc. (Honours) in Environmental Science with a minor in Environmental Toxicology, both from SFU. Her interdisciplinary expertise spans marine ecology, conservation biology, environmental toxicology, and ecological economics. She has contributed to diverse projects鈥攆rom salmon energetics and microplastic toxicity to ecosystem service valuation and participatory fisheries science.
With over a decade of experience in science communication and public outreach, Sarah has led educational programming at the Vancouver Aquarium, participated in Arctic outreach with Parks Canada, and volunteered in marine mammal rehabilitation. She is a published author in peer-reviewed journals, a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences, and a recipient of numerous research grants and academic awards, including the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and Mitacs Accelerate.
Sarah鈥檚 work is guided by a commitment to environmental sustainability, social equity, and regenerative practices that support resilient coastal communities and ecosystems. In her free time, you can usually find Sarah reading novels, kayaking, or exploring with her beagle, Tova.
