Q&A WITH GREER

Where is your hometown, and which secondary school did you attend?

I grew up in Whitehorse, Yukon, and attended Vanier Catholic Secondary.

Why did you choose SFU and the Faculty of Environment?

My parents actually both went to SFU, so it was always one of my goals to go here. I sort of ended up in Environment by accident. I started out as a dance major, but had a severe injury in my first semester. I took some classes from a number of different faculties and decided I enjoyed the Archaeology courses the best.

What program are you in?

I am an Archaeology major, and I am currently completing my honors thesis in biological anthropology.

How did you choose your program? Why is it/How did you know it was right for you?

I chose my program because I enjoyed the classes the most out of anything I took in my first year. I thought the professors in the department were really engaging, and the other students were very welcoming.

Are you involved in any volunteer activities on or off campus?

I volunteered as the Executive Assistant on the SFU Athletics Dance Team this year. It was my second year on the team and was such a great experience. I actually also just started volunteering at VOKRA.

What message do you have for new students? What do you wish you knew then?

I think something I heard many times, but wish I actually believed is that you don鈥檛 have to have your whole degree (or life) planned out exactly to be happy! Life almost never happens how you think it will, and you鈥檙e allowed to change your mind, your career path, or stay at SFU a semester longer than you thought you expected without it being the end of the world.

Do you have a favourite spot on campus? Why it's special to you?

This is probably a clich茅, but my favourite spot is the pond. My parents got married there when I was 3, and it鈥檚 one of my earliest memories. Every time I walk across the pond it reminds me of my parents and how much they love each other and makes even my worst days better.

Do you have a favourite class?

I would say my favourite class was Human Osteology. It was the first upper level class I ever took and got me hooked on biological anthropology.

What was the most interesting subject you've studied so far?

Definitely forensics. I completed the Forensic Studies Certificate alongside with my degree and enjoyed every single class. It鈥檚 a very broad and rapidly expanding field, and I am hoping to further my education in forensic anthropology.

What are your plans for the future, be that the rest of your time at SFU or post-graduation?

For the rest of the summer I鈥檓 just going to be focusing on doing my best in my courses and staying happy and healthy. I鈥檓 also going to Lisbon for a few days to present at a conference there. I鈥檝e never been more nervous about something in my life but I am at the same time incredibly excited.

In September, I am going home to the Yukon to work so I can save up for grad school and spend time with my family. I am hoping to become a Board Certified forensic anthropologist, for which I will eventually need a PhD. As much as I love SFU, home is where the heart is, and the Yukon is a difficult place to stay away from for too long.

I am SFU because... I lived in Louis Riel (the residence that just got torn down) for the first three years of my life while my parents were completing their degrees, I even went to daycare in Madge!

Fun fact: I have an identical twin sister!
