Congratulations to Marcel Allen for successfully defending his MA thesis, 鈥淪econdary to the scene: Exploring gendered harassment in the Fighting Game Community鈥�.

Abstract
The professionalization of video game competitions has drawn worldwide attention from fans, investors, and academics. Esports research has not shied away from the industry鈥檚 blights of gendered discrimination and sexual harassment. Few studies, however, have recognized that esports is not a monolith and that variation in organizational structure might explain variation in gendered harassment. This article presents an early venture into the fighting game community (FGC) 鈥� a comparatively offline esports niche 鈥� and the ways that members have responded to claims of widespread sexual harassment. To investigate this phenomenon, 19 FGC members were interviewed about their experiences of and thoughts about gendered hostility in their community. This qualitative investigation employed a thematic analysis to detail how harassment in the FGC often reflects the cultural mores of its members. These beliefs subtly reinforce a schema wherein women are incompatible with the 鈥榟ardcore鈥� FGC. Theoretical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
